Claudia Rankine, MacArthur Fellow and award-winning poet, will offer a Friday keynote inspired by her recent book, Just Us: An American Conversation. She will be joined by San Francisco analyst, Francisco Gonzalez. Saturday will be a day of presentations and study on the intersectionality of our current world crises and gender and sexuality.
Two panels of forward-thinking psychoanalysts, along with break-out groups for self-study will offer the enriching opportunity to think, synthesize and reflect on issues concerning race, class, health and politics and the place of gender and sexuality.
This conference is open to members of the mental health community, as well as anyone interested in exploring the psychological impact of the pandemic on social issues embedded in our global fabric.

First Panel:The Psychological Impact of Our Current Crisis Through the Lens of Race, Politics, Economics and Gender
The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted our global population in immeasurable ways. This panel will explore the ways in which the psychological impact of the pandemic is affected by race, politics, economics and gender in the United States and abroad. Diverse panelists Jhuma Basak, Annie Lee Jones, and Ann Pelligrini will each speak individually, and then converse together with the help of a facilitator, Hilli Dagony-Clark. We will then open the conversation to the audience, inviting questions and comments in response to the panelist’s discussions.

Second Panel: The Impact of the Pandemic Crisis on Gender Dynamics: A Time of Transformation
Four women psychoanalysts-Margarita Cereijido, Janice Lieberman, Letitia Glocer Fiorini, and Paula Ellman- will present brief papers that address different aspects of the fallout of the pandemic that are relevant to women and gender-based issues. Women around the world have been negatively affected by job loss and a regression to traditional gender roles. Many women have been victims of violence and search for safe spaces in which to recover. Like any crisis, the pandemic also has created openings for change. Following the presentations, the audience will be invited to join in an exchange.

- Describe how “…you cannot put the past behind you…it’s buried deep inside you; it’s turned your flesh into its own cupboard…not everything remembered is useful but it comes from the world to be stored in you.”
- Explain the statement that “If you admit to being a racist…that you are being driven by projections and stereotypes that were formed at the creation of our country.”
- Compare the work of psychoanalytic interpretation to the work of poetry…” So that the words…become a door to one’s own internal investigation…if the poem (or interpretation does its job, it just opens up.”
First Panel
- Analyze the intersection between the COVID-19 pandemic and race, politics, economics, and gender.
- Compare and contrast the ways in which cultural differences have exacerbated the toll of the pandemic on underprivileged minorities.
- Demonstrate increased sensitivity and awareness of the ways in which politics surrounding the pandemic have impacted racially and economically diverse minorities.
Second Panel
- Describe some of the individual developmental and intrapsychic factors that have resulted in the departure of so many women from the workforce during the pandemic.
- Identify why the fragility and vulnerability resulting from the pandemic have enabled some to play less stereotyped roles, while others have regressed into “othering” stereotyping and denigrating gender roles.
- Demonstrate how the multi-layered concept of “space” has been unveiled during the pandemic and how the pandemic has opened up social fractures with regard to race and gender.

NY Licensed Psychologists: The PTI-CFS is recognized by the NYS Education Department’s State Board for Psychology as an approved provide of continuing education for Licensed Psychologists #PSY-0017.
DC, MD and VA Psychologists: The CFS is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. The CFS maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
DC, MD and VA Social Workers: The Social Work Boards of the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia will grant continuing education credits to social workers attending a program offered by an APA authorized sponsor.
CE credits will only be granted to participants with documented attendance of the entire program and completed online evaluation form. No partial credit will be offered. It is the responsibility of the participants seeking CE credits to comply with these requirements. Upon completion of this program and online evaluation form, participants will be granted 8 CE credits.
